Sustainability Leaders Program
A brief description of the employee educators program (1st program):
Leaders are trained through a one-hour session that includes information about what Elon is doing to be sustainable and discusses how individual offices/departments can help support Elon's sustainability efforts. Leaders use a sustainable workplace assessment tool to guide outreach activities in their office/department. For example, if the assessment tool reveals confusion about proper waste reduction, additional bin signage may be added and this topic discussed at a staff meeting. Leaders are key to sharing information from the Office of Sustainability, and have helped their offices by doing things like posting waste signage or informing colleagues about new programs such as thin plastics recycling.
Ongoing support is provided to Leaders through a Sustainability Leaders Lunch held each semester. These provide an opportunity to network and share sustainability ideas. They also provide an opportunity to discuss how the Office of Sustainability can further support Sustainability Leaders and for the Office to provide updates on sustainability initiatives on campus. The topic for each lunch is determined based on current needs and events as well as Leader feedback. The Office also distributes a monthly Newsletter via email to Leaders about new and upcoming programs and events. In addition, the Leaders have a listserv and Moodle site for communication between in-person meetings.
Leaders are eligible to apply for the Sustainability Leaders Mini Grant Program. This program provides $100 – $1,000 in one-time funding to support small projects which promote sustainable practices within departments/offices, such as purchasing reusable utensils for a shared kitchen space.
