A brief description of the themed semester, year, or first-year experience:
Edmonds Community College has a Community Reads program, and has been doing so since 2007. Faculty are encouraged to incorporate the books into assignments. There is an event, usually in winter quarter, where the author comes to campus to talk about the book and other activities may be organized related to the book. The college Foundation also provides 3 scholarships to students for spring quarter for submitting excellent project proposals related to the book.
In the past 3 years, all of the books relate to sustainability: Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet by Jamie Ford (relating to issues of social equity); The Big Burn by Timothy Egan (the establishment of public forest lands in America); and The Boy Who Harnassed the Wind by by William Kamkwamba and Bryan Mealer (alternative energy production in developing countries).
