Does the institution have a policy, plan, and/or strategies to reduce stormwater runoff from ongoing campus operations? :
Yes

A brief description of the institution's stormwater management initiatives:
The university has put into place a number of stormwater management initiatives in the last five year, two of which were grant funded (National Fish and Wildlife Foundation), and several of which came about in the construction of the three LEED Gold residence halls on campus. Impetuous for these projects has come from faculty doing water quality research with undergraduate student classes in the area and also from the Physical Plant wanting to address erosion concerns and stormwater-related flooding as more impervious parking has been installed on campus. Initiatives include installation of large (2 acre) riparian areas, 15 rain-barrels, a rain-garden, removal of an asphalt parking lot replaced with turf, bioretention beds around three residence halls, and installation of a flow-through planter at the end of a parking lot. See page 38 in below document.

Does the institution have a living or vegetated roof?:
Yes
None
A brief description of the institution's living or vegetated roof:
EMU has a green vegetated roof on a bicycle storage facility adjacent to a newly constructed residence hall. It made up part of the stormwater plan for that building's LEED application.
None
Does the institution have porous paving?:
Yes
None
A brief description of the institution's porous paving:
As part of our LEED Gold residential Quad a large area of permeable pavers was used in stead of concrete. This has eliminated a significant erosion problem in the area.
None
Does the institution have retention ponds?:
Yes
None
A brief description of the institution's retention ponds:
The university has retention ponds in three locations, slowing down and reducing the volume of stormwater fed into the university's Park Woods Forest and Blacks Run stream. This will help stabilize stream banks in the Forest and lessen the impact heavy flooding has on vegetation in the small urban forest. On a larger scale the project will aid in the restoration of the Chesapeake Bay and in improving water quality in our watershed.

Yes
None
A brief description of other technologies or strategies for stormwater management employed:
In June of 2012 Eastern Mennonite University completed construction of a 100,000 gallon storm water management cistern. The $80,000 project harvests water runoff draining from houses, buildings, roads, and parking lots across 15 acres of university property. The stormwater collected in the cistern waters four athletic fields in addition to other campus vegetation. The cistern also acts as an aid in flood control for the Park Woods Forest which currently suffers from large quantities of stormwater that erode intermittent streams running through the woods.
