Does the institution have strategies in place to safely dispose of all hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste and seek to minimize the presence of these materials on campus?:
Yes
None
A brief description of steps taken to reduce hazardous, special (e.g. coal ash), universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
Measures taken to reduce the volume of hazardous waste generated includes:
focusing on reducing the volume of chemicals used and the hazardous nature of the chemicals. Where possible non-hazardous chemicals are used for educational and research purposes. Where acid and base represent the sole hazard characteristic of a chemical steps are taken to neutralize them on site and release them to the laboratory drain.
EMU does not have a waste chemical disposal permit and relies completely on reputable disposal companies for the disposal of its hazardous chemicals except for acids and bases as mentioned above.
None
A brief description of how the institution safely disposes of hazardous, universal, and non-regulated chemical waste:
Hazardous Chemicals generated in the Science Center (Chemistry and Biology Departments)are collected in holding areas from where they are moved to a central storage for pick up by a hazard waste disposal company (Potomac Environmental or Clean Harbors). We are an Exempt Small Quantity Generator and have the generated waste chemicals removed annually.
Waste chemical containers are appropriately labeled and the additions are closely supervised by the faculty. Spill containment materials including appropriate personal protective equipment are on hand for handling spills.
Waste chemicals originating in the Science Center are end products of educational and research endeavors. No salable products are generated.
