A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:
A yearly date is set for e-waste recycling by Information Systems. A few days before, IS employees catalog and sort old equipment. On the day selected, IS and recycling crew, outfitted with gloves, palletize the material on the ground outside the IS storage area. Pallets are then moved with pallet jacks and the drop-gate on the truck to prevent lifting injuries. Multiple crew members help carry heavy and/or fragile items to the pallets.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:
EMU has chosen to recycle our e-waste through Basel Action Network E-Stewards Certified recycler, Redemtech/Arrow Valley Recovery in Richmond Virginia after much discussion and research. Redemtech/AVR is more expensive than some of the other options, but we felt it was important to be certain that the material was being properly recycled and not getting dumped in developing countries, many of which our students spend a required semester abroad living and studying in.
