A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, bills, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
EICCD assisted US Congressman Bruce Braley (IA 1st District) craft the language for HR 872 New Era Act of 2007 - the very first bill Congressman Braley introduced as a new representative. After the bill was introduced, EICCD worked with other community colleges across the country to get legislative support in their areas. The bill became law, creating a grant program for Iowa's community colleges to offer renewable energy workforce training programs. The bill established a recurring grant program at the US Dept of Agriculture to provide grants to community colleges and advanced training facilities that train the next generation of agricultural-based energy professionals. EICCD subsequently received a New Era grant to establish an Agriculture-based Renewable Energy Center (AREC) with an impact including "an increased number of high school and community college educators who are better prepared to teach in the agriculture-based renewable energy field and ultimately an increased number of rural students enrolling in agriculture-based renewable energy programs and working in agricultur=based renewable energy jobs."
