The charter or mission statement of the committee or a brief description of the committee's purview and activities :
The EICCD sustainability Initiative was organized in the fall of 2007 following our institution’s signing of the ACUPCC. An open retreat on the topic of how EICCD could command a leadership role in and contribute to sustainability efforts was held for all interested EICCD faculty, staff, and students. Based on the outcome of this retreat, district-wide teams were formed to address the identified priority issues and to develop and implement sustainability-related goals and projects through the strategic planning process. The teams were charged with developing action plans relating to:
• Business Practices
• Community Leadership
• Curriculum
• Measurement & Celebration
• New & Existing Facilities
• Recycling
These plans contain both short-term and long-term actions and continue to evolve as projects are completed and new priorities emerge.
One of the first formal initiative-related actions taken by the EICCD Board of Trustees in January 2008 was adoption of a sustainability policy to acknowledge the District’s goal of increasing sustainability and working in cooperation with the ACUPCC agreement. The EICCD Sustainability Policy reads as follows:
As an educational institution and a community leader, Eastern Iowa Community College District seeks to engage in sustainable practices as an organization and to promote and understanding of the importance and practices of sustainability within our students and community.
To the greatest extent feasible, Eastern Iowa Community College District commits to conserving natural resources, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, minimizing generation of waste, purchasing environmentally- friendly and energy-efficient products, using recycled and recyclable materials, using sustainable energy sources, and reducing student and staff commuting, and will strive to employ a minimum of the LEED Silver Standard in now construction.
The EICCD Sustainability Initiative has a self-led mission to:
• Work together to maintain compliance with the ACUPCC and toward obtaining carbon neutrality
• Incorporate sustainability into EICCD’s educational philosophy to create an environment that will encourage and grow support for sustainability by all students, faculty and staff, provide all sectors of EICCD population with basic knowledge of sustainability principles, and foster an attitude of involvement and action in the mission to create a sustainable future
• Implement the sustainability directive included in the mission statement of EICCD by encompassing social, environmental and economic aspects of sustainability within all facets of EICCD operations, practices, and philosophies, and within the local community
• Strive to achieve the highest possible rating under the Sustainability Tracking and Rating System (STARS) program administrated by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education(AASHE)
• Share knowledge and specifics of EICCD Sustainability Initiative with other academic institutions so that all my progress toward greater sustainability
