Does the institution advocate for national, state/provincial, or local public policies that support campus sustainability or that otherwise advance sustainability?:
Yes

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, legislation, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:

The Institute for Sustainable Energy at Eastern Connecticut State University participates in the development of state-level (Connecticut) policies that advance campus sustainability. For example, the Director of ISE was appointed by the Governor to serve on the Governor’s Council on Climate Change. The Council is charged with identifying interim GHG targets for Connecticut and identify strategies to meet CT’s goal of 80% reductions in GHG emissions by 2050. The Leadership, Accountability, & Engagement Workgroup of the Council is reviewing models of leadership within sectors, including higher education, to accomplish CT’s climate goals.

In addition to the Governor’s Council on Climate Change, ISE testifies before the CT General Assembly to support effective public policy on energy and sustainability. The Institute does not “advocate,” but serves as an objective resource and participant in the development of public policy that supports a sustainable energy future for Connecticut. For example, in 2015, ISE Director testified before the CT General Assembly Energy & Technology Committee to support and strengthen the following bills: shared clean energy facilities (i.e., community solar), local economic development and access to residential renewable energy (increasing the CT Green Bank’s residential solar investment program), electric and zero-emission vehicles, distributed energy resources, and agricultural customers and virtual net metering.
