A brief description of steps taken to ensure that e-waste is recycled responsibly, workers’ basic safety is protected, and environmental standards are met:
According to Sims Recycling, the company that recycles ETSU e-waste, they have recycled hundreds of tons of e-waste responsibly. Their facility meets all local, state and federal guidelines for a safe work place and environmental protection. All e-waste is recycled on site and no waste goes to landfills or overseas.
All campus collection and storage is done in a safe, responsible, and secure manner.

A brief description of the electronic waste recycling program for institution-generated materials:
All workable ETSU e-surplus is first offered to local K-12 school systems. Then workable surplus not used by schools is sold on a government auctions site called Gov Deals (http://www.govdeals.com/).
Finally all obsolete and non-workable e-waste is gathered in a secure locked area until a tractor trailer load has been collected. At that time Sims Recycling sends a truck to pick it up. A certificate of destruction can be sent upon request.
