Sustainability at East Tennessee State University in both education and research is an interdisciplinary domain focusing on the dynamic relationship between the environment, economy, society and humanity. Sustainable systems preserve and advance individual and public health and health awareness, social equity, economic prosperity, and the vigorous functioning of ecological systems now and in the future. The greatest renewable and sustainable resources are the students, faculty and staff of the university. The sustainable environment known as East Tennessee State University prepares a diverse population of students to become productive, enlightened citizens who actively serve their communities and our world. This is accomplished by the provision of innovative and integrated programs of study and a multitude of research opportunities. Included are professional programs in various health sciences that advance the health and wellness of people throughout Tennessee, the Appalachian region and underserved populations nationally and around the world. The research mission advances scholarly and creative activity that enhances the teaching and learning environment and benefits the regional, national, and global communities served.

Key words that might indicate a sustainability focused or related course were selected by the curriculum commitee. Course Catalogs (undergraduate, graduate, College of Medicine, College of Pharmacy)were then filtered using these keywords as identifiers. A list of possible courses were identified and then sent to representatives and Deans from each College to determine whether a course met the criteria and if so, whether it met the definition of sustainability related or focused.
