The Sustainability Manager has completed Implicit Bias training and attended multiple DEI trainings on recruiting for diversity. The Sustainability Outreach Specialist position has been posted to add a staff member and double our capacity for the ECU Sustainability Program. The position was posted on the following sites that recruit for diversity and are used in campus wide hiring practices:

Does the sustainability office ensure that sustainability employees complete DEI training?:
Yes

A brief description of the DEI trainings for sustainability employees:

The University Sustainability Manager is the only full-time sustainability staff member at ECU. The USM has completed Safe Zone Training offered by the LGBTQ Resource Center. The USM has also attended and hosted Facilities Services viewing parties for multiple DEI training workshops and seminars.


Does the sustainability office regularly collaborate on events, projects, or initiatives with the institution’s DEI office/program and/or organizations that support underrepresented groups on campus?:

A brief description of events, projects, or initiatives during the previous year developed in collaboration with the DEI office/program and/or organizations that support underrepresented groups on campus:

For the past two years, the Sustainability Film and Discussion Series has screened films and hosted panel discussions in collaboration with faculty members to celebrate Black History Month (February) and International Women's Month (March).

For the past 3 years, the University Sustainability Manager has served as a staff advisor to an Honor's College group project called UterUs, which raises awareness about affordable, accessible, and sustainable feminine hygiene products. This group has hosted events and raised money to purchase reusable menstrual cups that are given to ECU students for free. For every cup given to a student on campus, another cup is donated to a local food bank or women's shelter.

For the past two years, the ECU Sustainability Manager has worked with many diverse student groups to maintain the trails at Otter Creek Natural Area. This has included multiple volunteer workdays in collaboration with the ECU Black Student Union (BSU).

Yes

Each year, the Sustainability Committee includes one staff member from the Office for Equity and Diversity.
