Does the institution offer at least one sustainability-focused major, degree, or certificate program for undergraduate students?:
Yes

Name of the sustainability-focused undergraduate degree program:
Bachelor of Science in Geography

A brief description of the undergraduate degree program:

The discipline of geography offers an important interdisciplinary approach to critical societal and environmental themes such as climate change, the spread of disease, and development in vulnerable coastal regions, as well as social justice, local knowledge, and globalization. ECU’s bachelor of science in applied geography offers a setting for you to work closely with faculty, students, and the community to develop a set of skills and a global perspective to help solve environmental and social issues. The geography faculty works at the interface between society and the natural world, and this interdisciplinary approach is integrated into most of the classes that you will take. The curriculum spans social justice, globalization, geographic information systems, landform processes, and atmospheric science.

The BS degree in applied geography will leave you with the skills you’ll need to help build a dynamic career solving social and environmental issues. These include a keen understanding of the geographic features of earth and how they interact with social systems, as well as computer and technological skills related to map-making, geolocation, and terrain analysis. Students have the opportunity to gain valuable internship experience with state and city government and the private sector, working on community development, hazards impacts, coastal issues, and other topics.

Yes

Name of the sustainability-focused undergraduate minor or concentration:
Coastal and Marine Studies

A brief description of the undergraduate minor or concentration:

ECU’s Coastal and Marine Studies Interdisciplinary Minor prepares students with a broad understanding of coastal and marine resources, science, and management in order to understand policy dilemmas and critically assess solutions. Students are prepared to apply their COAS knowledge to augment competency and skills gained in a major field of study. The minor is open to both science and non-science majors, offers a core knowledge of oceanography and coastal-marine resources, and provides avenues for specialization and field or laboratory experience.

Students may be interested in the COAS Minor if they are curious about:

• How do coastal resources reflect ecosystem health, economics, and our cultural heritage?

• How are coastal and marine systems affected by land use and climate change?

• What environmental management solutions can alleviate marine pollution, plastics, ocean dumping, and oil spills?

• How important are marine fisheries to the global food supply, and what science and management techniques are necessary to sustain them?

• What are the processes and impacts of climate and environmental change on the ocean and coast?

• How is North Carolina and the rest of the world dealing with chronic coastal erosion, storm surges, and sea-level rise?
