Durham College has signed the Pan Canadian Protocol for Sustainability. Signatories to the Protocol agree to provide leadership to their internal and external communities and to maximize their contribution to a sustainable future. The Protocol is broad in scope in order to enable institutions to develop policies and practices consistent with their capabilities. It is reasonably expected that the implementation of this Protocol will vary from institution to institution.

A brief description of other political positions the institution has taken during the previous three years (if applicable):

Durham College supports the Metrolinx GO train northern route extension to Bowmanville. In 2019, Don Lovisa, Durham College President participated
as a speaker at a transportation summit, along with keynote speaker, the Honourable Jeff Yurek, Ontario Minister of Transportation.

Peter Garrett, Manager, Strategic Reporting & Government Relations also sits on the government relations committee for the Ajax-Pickering Board of Trade, the Greater Oshawa Chamber of Commerce, and the Whitby Chamber of Commerce. Peter also represents DC on the Pickering Board of Trade transportation task force.

A brief description of political donations the institution made during the previous three years (if applicable):

As a publicly funded organization, provincial legislation prevents Durham College from making political donations or using college dollars on political activities. The college has a non-partisan approach to politics – it works with politicians at all levels and from all parties. Our approach is that we are a resource to politicians and we provide support and information where needed, along with updating them on our priorities. Because of this non-partisan approach, we are often sought out to sit on political committees. As two examples, our president was asked to sit on a Region Government Committee looking at the composition of Regional Council, and he was also asked to moderate a community session about GO Train expansion through our region. In both cases, he was asked to take part because of his approach to being a community builder who works with all types of organizations and interests.
