Wingfield Pines: Nature and Technology Working Together
For years, Duquesne students and faculty combine community service with environmental sampling at Wingfield Pines, an 80-acre tract in Upper St. Clair, Pa. that was formerly a strip mining site. Duquese students and faculty work on continued research and remediation on this site.

The Charles Henry Leach II Fund for Duquesne University Request for Proposals

The Grant Program
The Leach Fund for Duquesne University is designed to benefit Duquesne University faculty and University-related projects that foster and promote the following:
1) the prevention of cruelty to animals;
2) the mental and/or physical health and education of underprivileged and/or abused children;
3) the protection of the environment;
4) scientific research.


Has the institution published written policies and procedures that give positive recognition to interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary research during faculty promotion and/or tenure decisions?:

A brief description of the institution’s support for interdisciplinary, transdisciplinary, and multidisciplinary research, including any positive outcomes during the previous three years:

As research problems have become increasingly complex, interdisciplinary and collaborative research has gained steadily in prominence. Here at Duquesne and more broadly, bottom-up consortia have had considerable success in developing long-term research programs focused on complex problems at key intersections within and between the sciences, the social sciences and the humanities.

The Provost’s Office wishes to encourage interdisciplinary research consortia at Duquesne and is therefore providing seed funds to support expenses associated with developing such consortia and moving them to a sustainable level.

Funding of up to $25,000 per year may be requested for a maximum of two years, with the expectation that, beyond that time, external funding will be acquired to sustain and grow the consortium and broaden its impact.

The Gumberg Library research guide on Literature and the Environment connects users to a number of different works (books, reference works, and electronic resources) with information regarding the environment and sustainability.
