A brief description of the sustainable operations and maintenance policy/program and/or O+M rating system(s) used:
Douglas College facilities are not currently certified by any rating systems focused on operations and maintenance (e.g., LEED O+M), and are not managed in accordance with an energy and water management program such as US EPA Portfolio Manager.
However, operations and maintenance practices at the College are aligned with best practices found in LEED O+M wherever possible and implemented on a project-by-project basis.
For example:
- low-flow fixtures are installed in any replacements on an ongoing basis
- replacement of boilers and chillers with high-efficiency models
- installing LED lighting with daylight and motion sensors to reduce electricity demand
- using alternative materials where possible on renovation projects. For example, a recent renovation used 1,690 pairs of recycled denim jeans as wall insulation, creating 53% less CO2e than conventional fiberglass insulation
- using green cleaning products as part of the facilities cleaning program
