A brief description of how sustainability is included in new employee orientation:

Douglas College provides orientation and onboarding to 100% of our new employees (Auxiliaries, Regular Staff, Contract Faculty, Regular Faculty, Contract Employees) and all of them are also given access to our employee intranet (DC Connect) where there would be information on sustainability topics and initiatives at the College.

Our new employee onboarding is conducted via the following:
1.Completion of mandatory forms and training, via an online onboarding system (Employment Portal)
There is a task in the system for the new employee to log-in to the employee intranet, DC Connect and review the materials in the “New to Douglas” page. In this page would be information related to departments handling sustainability.
DC Connect also has regular articles on social responsibility/sustainability initiatives and resources for all employees to read and be guided by.
2. Attendance to HR’s New Employee JumpStart sessions (held every Monday morning), where new employees hired the past week attend a 45-minute session. Part of this session is provision of information for a greener campus.
Script:
• Douglas College is a green campus. Within your office and all around the campuses, you will find bins for compost, mixed containers, paper, soft plastics, and garbage.
• We have designated parking spots for electric vehicles.
• Additionally, please note that all Douglas College campuses are smoke free, this includes smoking, vaping, and chewing tobacco.
• Employees are also referred to the College’s goal towards improved environmental stewardship and sustainable practices as reflected in the college website page.

3. Attendance to twice-a-year MAKING CONNECTIONS-New Employee Welcome Event, where as part of the virtual campus tour, employees are made aware of the sustainability efforts the College is undertaking and they are encourages to follow suit. Locations of recycling bins, water fountains, secure bike parkades for employees, EV plugging station locations within the campus parkade, etc. and other sustainability initiatives are pointed out.
4.New employees also get departmental orientations and departments are encouraged to point out sustainability initiatives and encourage social responsibility.
