A brief description of the formal sustainability course designation program:
Faculty and department chairs are invited to request designation of courses as sustainability-related "Sustainability Connections (SCON)" or sustainability-focused "Sustainability Investigations (SINV)" by indicating SCON OR SINV on the “Capacity / Attributes / Prerequisites” box of Dickinson's course submission system. This process occurs every semester, and all courses are designated at the section level. A subcommittee of our Academic Programs and Standards Committee reviews the nominations for designations from faculty and approves a new list every semester. This list in then processed by the registrar's office so that the approved course sections can carry the sustainability attribute in our course search and tracking system.

They are tagged with an attribute that is both searchable and trackable by students, faculty and staff. The tag "attribute" is then used to pull the courses into a searchable database that can be search by term, faculty, department of keyword. This has worked since 2012, when the courses were officially tagged. This system also allows students to easily identify sustainability courses being offered across our curriculum in advance of the student course selection process. This is a win/win for faculty recruiting students for their courses and for students who want to find electives that are related to or focused on sustainability
