A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability:
The annual DePauw Move Out is approaching its 11th year of community involvement. In partnership with the Family Support Services of West Central Indiana, all unwanted items are donated by students, collected from university-owned housing units and distributed to local families in need and nonprofits in the area. All remaining items are sold at affordable prices through a community-wide garage sale benefitting Family Support Services of West Central Indiana.
In 2019, more student and staff volunteers participated in collecting and sorting donations than ever before, more community members attended the sale and more money was raised for Family Support Services – more than $4,000! The program has grown from supporting 11 families in 2009 to more than 250 families in 2019. Tons of unwanted items have been displaced from landfills as a result of this campus- and community-wide effort.
