A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability, including the issues, bills, and ordinances for or against which the institution has advocated:
MAP Grant Funding: The Student Government Association of DePaul University has actively been on the front line of advocating and fighting for the Monetary Award Program (MAP Grants). This program provides grants to low-income Illinois students who are or will be attending a college in the state of Illinois. This grant allows students who would not normally be able to attend college a chance to ease the cost of ever rising tuition in higher education. DePaul has about 4600 students who currently receive the MAP Grant which equates to roughly $22 million. DePaul is the second largest recipient of this grant in Illinois. MAP Grant funding is imperative for the viability and sustainability of keeping with our mission: providing a quality, yet affordable education to the most vulnerable and marginalized in society. In 2009, DePaul’s Student Government Association led the fight among Illinois Colleges and University’s against the cuts in MAP Grant by Illinois legislators. This fight still continues today and DePaul still remains a leader in this fight.
