A brief description of the event(s):
Environmental Concerns Committee:
The Environmental Concerns Committee is housed under DePaul's Student Government Association. The Student Government Instituted the ECC in 2010 in an effort to further implement sustainable initiatives on campus. The ECC collaborates with administration, faculty, staff, and students to increase sustainable practices and environmental awareness. ECC is a student-led committee, currently with about 15 creative, dynamic and committed student members from many different majors within DePaul.
In 2010, the ECC surveyed students to collect preliminary data regarding a University Green Fee. The results received from the student population was around an 80% approval rate to institute a University Green Fee at DePaul.
DePaul University's Student Government Association's Environmental Concerns Committee organizes a series of events for Earth Week with the student population as the targeted audience.
The 2011 Earth Week featured the following events:
A Bike Clinic to promote alternative methods of transportation.
The committee brought in Kellen Marshall, a research coordinator of the Eden Place Nature Center in Chicago's Fuller Park community. The speaker presentation was entitled, "Sustainable Communities Speaking: Kellen Marshall." Kellen discussed her role, career path, and issues surrounding the sustainability industry.
A film screening of the documentary, "Blue Gold." The Environmental Concerns Committee along with DePaul's A.V. Club presented the screening to discuss the value, future, and issues surrounding the world's water supply.
The committee also hosted a native species planting event where students could plant native Illinois species around the Lincoln Park Student Center.
