National advocacy
A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the national level:
De La Salle Lipa hosted the Verde Island Passage (VIP) Summit in September 2023, which was themed Charting a Sustainable Future for the Verde Island Passage, held at the Nexus Innovations Labs. The event was conducted in partnership with the Center for Energy, Ecology, and Development (CEED), Protect the Verde Island, Caritas Philippines, and Mindoro State University. It was attended by various stakeholders, including the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), local government officials from Batangas and Mindoro, fisherfolks from the provinces surrounding the Verde Island Passage, conservation organizations, NGOs, and academic institutions.
Dr. Ma. Theresa Mangulabnan, the VP for Mission during that time, was among the facilitators of the multi-sectoral groups that underwent in-depth discussions on key topics related to the current state of the VIP, and came up with Strategies, and Plans of Action for the Preservation and Protection of the VIP to be presented to the concerned local government units and key environmental government agencies. Likewise, Br. Manuel Pajarillo FSC, the VC for Research and Innovation, was among the speakers of the 2-day summit.
As a result of the Summit, last May 2024, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR), Aboitiz Equity Ventures (AEV), the Metro Pacific Investments Corporation (MPIC), and San Miguel Corporation (SMC) agreed to assume joint stewardship of the critical waterway between Luzon and Mindoro islands in a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the DENR and the Department of Energy (DOE).
