Part 3. Employee community service program
A brief description of the institution’s program to support employee volunteering:
As of 2024, every Dawson employee can use 1 hour per week during their work day to engage in well-being activities for themselves, others or the environment. With over 1000 employees, this represents a potentiol of 1000+ hrs of well-being related work being directed to the internal or external community weekly. Managers have no say in what empoyees choose to do, they simply approve the placement of the hour within the work week. Human Resources approves the activity.
Every year since 2019, staff involved in the Sustainable Happiness Certificate have a pay-it-forward project. They could use paid "work time" to participate in the workshops and develop the final project. Showcasing how being involved in sustainability action influences one's happiness, and by extension one's well-being, has been a profound shift in thinking. Some would not call this volunteer time as the employees were still being paid, but the concept discussed is not to penalize employees who can give time outside of their job description to help implement Dawson's core value of Well-Being for All.

5010 hrs was based conservatively on aprroximately 25% of Dawson staff using their allocated 1hr/wk of paid time to volunteer or contribute to individual or community wellness x 20 wks. Some employees volunteer during their lunchtime or after work, and this is estimated.
Student Community Service: The Quebec Ministry of Education has a formal program for all college students with regards to Community Service. If 60 hrs are completed in one semester, the college submits the students name to the ministry and a special mention is put on the dilpoma of the student upon graduation. Each college admisters their respective community service program. At Dawson College, students answered the Sustainability Culture survey section about community service - 880 students identified that they participate in community service of some kind and 507 identified as "not sure". Half of the students who identified as "not sure" were included as individuals participating in community service because in feedback from survey participants, most didn't identify "volunteering for organizations or the college" as "community service" in the survey. Many, in fact, were involved in community service but didn't identify it as such. A 50% inclusion was considered a conservative estimate.
