A brief description of the institution’s formal community partnership to advance sustainability:
Dawson continues work with Preparatory Tres Marias in Morelos, Mexico, on several sustainability fronts. A water capture project is almost complete as of 2024 and an exchange program considered for 2025. A Sustainable Happiness (SH) program was implemented in 2022 and a celebration of Mexico's first SH Certificate holders was implemented at the Preparatory in March 2023 (included as an Innovation).
History of project (pre-2021): Previously, a program titled Sustainable Campuses has been active for 6 years and is part of several grants received by the College. Three Mexican university partnerships in the state of Morelos were signed. Dawson pays for the travel, coordinators on site, equipment, pedagogical material and has given 20 student research micro-scholarships. All aspects of sustainability are covered under a participatory research theme, including landscape renewal, establishment of gardens, committees, woman's groups, indigenous knowledge transfer, values education, support for women in school, leadership character, medicinal plants, culture and sustainability and community theatre as a teaching method, and group leadership.

2024 - Dawson works with the Earthvalues Institute, a charitable organization, to develop a NatureHood youth program with Nature Canada that teaches about urban wildlife. Seven summer day camps visit Dawson grounds and are taken through the various gardens, experience urban wildlife here and have nature interpretation sessions lead by Dawson students. This program lasts two weeks and then Daycare programs are offered to children as well. Partnership agreements are signed.

At COP15 in Montreal (2022), Dawson announced a bold initiative to attract and identify 1000 species on our city block, only 1.5 km from downtown Montreal, in 1000 days. This "1000 species in 1000 days" involves staff, students, children from day camp, and visitors as well.
Part of this initiatve was to develop a partnership with Live Beetles Canada, to organize Invertyebrate Expos for the public and to create and intoor and outdoor beetle sancuary where native beetles can thrive in micr-habitats creted on rooftops and campus grounds. Funds are allocated to develop an indoor habitat and to crete educational displays at the public events.
