1st program
A brief description of the student educators program (1st program):
Overview (2024): Student volunteers are trained to support a vast amount of sustainability initiatives within the college and especially upkeep the more than 400 indoor plants, rooftop vegetable gardens, Peace Garden, eco-zones on campus, ponds and bio-retention area. As such, they directly contribute to student experiments and projects going on in these areas. They transfer knowledge and question/answer sessions for peers on a regular basis.
Peer-to-peer Examples:
- Tours are given to classes about these endeavours. Hundreds of students study and tour the campus grounds. (2021-24)
- With regards to the waste sorting and composting system at Dawson volunteers are trained and then educate the Dawson student clientele with workshops in various high waste generating areas (cafeteria, lounge areas) on proper waste sorting, composting and are involved with individual waste bin audits on campus to showcase contents and suggest improved waste sorting behavior (started in 2021-22).
- "Kiosks" are implemented several times a year to increase awaremess of sustainability activities and accomplishments both indoors and outdoors during intensive periods like activities Earth week 2023 & 2024, summer garden maintenace (on-going), 1000 species iNaturalists workshops by students for students initiated in April 2023-24 and will continue.
A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (1st program):
All students are welcome to apply to become volunteers for the sustainability office. A designated area is set up for Sustainabili-Team volunteers to work, have access to computers and store material. The sustainability office supports the volunteers with materials and offers one special sustainability-related training or field trip each week in the summer months (e.g. urban agriculture, food justice). Training consists of Living Campus tours, risk management, professionalism, garden maintenance care, eco-zone maintenance, vegetable gardening maintenance & harvesting and outdoor micro-habitat/garden awareness workshops or 1000 species/1000 days

Some volunteers are training in media relations and represent Dawson for media interviews regarding sustainability accomplishments.
Volunteers who experience these workshops and experience with Office of Sustainability designated volunteer staff are put in leadership roles to help other students achieve autonomy in their sustainability role.

2nd program
A brief description of the student educators program (2nd program):
Every year, several students are accepted from the CRLT Program to be trained to implement specific sustainability activities to the general college population. This is an intermediate level where planning and leadership is expected with peer-related activities.

Entire college is potentially available to participate in activities advertised and offered by the Office of Sustainability team. Some activities involve students from the general population, while others are targeted groups.
Examples:
- Summer camp participants who visit the college
- Classes that want tours of garden areas or rooftops
- Daycare activities over 15 weeks
Students from the Coimmunity Recreation and Leadership Training Program will participte in implementing activities that in the Office of Sustainability. An average of 2 students will spend 6 hrs a week for 15 weeks (total 90hrs x 2=180hrs) leading other students.

3rd program
A brief description of the student educators program (3rd program):
3rd year students from the Community Recreation and Leadership Training Program will participte in implementing activities that in the Office of Sustainability. One student will spend 30 hrs a week for 15 weeks (total 450hrs) leading other students and guest groups. This is an advanced planning and leadership position where activities are expected with peers & guests. Independance and programming flexibility/adaptation is an expectation.
A brief description of the student educators program’s target audience (3rd program):
The Office of Sustainability volunteer office is open daily for volunteer student drop in and the intern is responsible for allocating set daily tasks for new volunteers and developing appropriate training and supervision for on-going projects that involve students. Daily tasks involve teaching about waste management - proper vermi-compost feeding of organic waste & upkeep to student groups, organic waste collection from campus sites, Living Campus Tours, garden maintenance and harvesting with student groups, proper set up of ongoing in-person activities (e.g. Dawson dining vegan meal service prep + hygiene protocol & operation of volunteer dishwashing centre).
Visiting student groups are given Living Campus Tours of sustainability projects inside and outside the buiding.
