A brief description of the institution’s wellness and/or employee assistance program(s):

Dalhousie has services and programs available to employees including the employee and family assistance program, regular health and wellness workshops, online resources, support groups, and fitness facilities. The employee and family assistance program provides immediate and confidential help for employees and their families in the areas of mental and physical help, financial wellness, legal aid, and family dynamics. Examples of health and wellness workshops include Becoming More Stress Resilient, Emotional Intelligence, Separating Home and Work. Our support groups include caregiving and menopause. We also have on-site fitness facilities with half-price membership for employees, as well as a corporate discount at GoodLife Fitness.

Students can access personal and group counselling services and peer support. The Ask a Nurse program allows students to ask health questions to a registered nurse online. Tranquillity is another online service for mental health, where students learn and track their mental health on an app. The health interpreter service makes healthcare more accessible by providing a translator for ESL students needing health services. Student Health Promotion uses peer-to-peer education to raise awareness about healthy eating and exercise, sexual health, stress management, and mental health, hosting Mental Health Week yearly. There is also a social worker on campus. There are a variety of health promotion activities that encourage students to take care of themselves and their peers, with a focus on substance abuse. Dalhousie also has a Medical Campus Response Team. Dalhousie has a Multifaith Centre that offers space and spiritual guidance. There is a fitness centre on campus for free and discounted training.

A copy of the institution's smoke-free policy:
The institution’s smoke-free policy:

Dalhousie is a no-smoking university. It is committed to providing a safe and healthy place in which to work and study. The university's non smoking policy came into effect on September 1, 2003. The policy prohibits smoking in all university buildings, including university residences, on university property and in university vehicles.

Moving to a smoke-free policy was a pioneering effort. Dalhousie was the first university in Canada to declare its property 'smoke-free'. The decision to adopt such a policy is strongly supported by students, faculty and staff. More than 82 per cent of Dalhousie community members who responded to a 2003 survey supported the policy's adoption.

Under this policy those who wish to smoke are asked to leave university property. While smoking on public property smokers are asked to avoid littering, to be respectful of others, and of course to abide by the municipal by-law.
