A brief description of the method(s) used to gather data about employee commuting:
The Office of Sustainability conducts an annual survey for Dalhousie employees, students, and faculty in the spring (March). The survey is run through an Opinio, a survey platform. The survey includes a series of transportation-related questions for understanding the travel behaviour of the Dalhousie community which provides data about the travel patterns of Dalhousie commuters. The survey data is analyzed every year by DalTrac (transportation research group) and findings are profiled in an annual report. The 23-24 survey had 2735 responses, which is a 10.5% sample size. Of the respondents, 20.8% were staff and 8.1% were faculty. To calculate the percentage of employees per mode of transit, we used the staff and faculty information from the DalTrac survey (% per mode of transit) multiplied by actual FTE Staff and Faculty headcounts to calculate the proportional mode of transit across the university, not just the sample size from the survey.
