Documentation
Do the figures reported above cover one, two, or three academic years?:
A brief description of the methodology used to complete the course inventory :
A comprehensive review was done of all courses within the 2023/24 Academic Calendar for keywords that were related to sustainability following the STARS-provided definitions, global poverty and inequality, natural resource depletion, and environment degradation, and major sustainability challenges such as climate change, water management, pollution, land use, biodiversity and conservation.
Inventory was completed by searching both the undergraduate and graduate academic timetables for courses offered within the 2023/2024 academic year that were sustainability focused and courses that include sustainability. The academic timetables list the available courses that students can take at the University. Within the course description, it was usually possible to infer whether or not a course is sustainability focused or includes sustainability.
The following course types were not included in the total course count or within the inventory:
- Internships
- Practicums
- Independent study
- Special topics
- Thesis
- Clinical
- Physical education
- Performance art
The completed inventory was disseminated to all faculties across the institution to validate by faculties for accuracy and thoroughness in the courses that were included, and to seek suggestions for any additional sustainability-related courses that might have been missed or initially excluded from the existing list.
How were courses with multiple offerings or sections counted for the figures reported above?:
A brief description of how courses with multiple offerings or sections were counted:
Courses were counted individually if they were offered multiple times within a term or year. Cross-listed classes across different departments were also individually counted.
