A brief description of the diversity and equity committee, office and/or officer, including purview and activities:
The mandate of Human Rights and Equity Services (HRES) is to foster and support an inclusive working and learning environment where all members of the University community share responsibility for establishing and maintaining a climate of respect. The office is responsible for Dalhousie Statement on Prohibited Discrimination, the Employee and Student Accommodation Policies (in conjunction with other departments), the Employment Equity Policy, the Personal Harassment Policy and the Sexual Harassment Policy. The Office also manages and monitors compliance under the Federal Contractors Program. HRES has recently updated the Sexual Assault Response Protocol and is working with the campus community to develop a stand-alone Sexual Violence Policy. There are 8 staff members at HRES: the Acting Executive Director, Human Rights & Case Management (Discrimination) Director, Intake & Special Projects Administrative Coordinator, Personal Harassment/Conflict Advisor, Sexual Violence Advisor, Education Advisor, contract Education Advisor, and an Equity Data Analyst.

Human Rights and Equity Services offers many workshops on a regular basis that focus on diversity and inclusion education serving staff, student and faculty. The office runs a conversation series called 'The Elephant in the Room' that addresses global awareness and sensitivity, participating in a diverse community, and privilege. It is also offered in three different levels to engage participants at different stages in their understanding of diversity and inclusion.
