IDEA Project

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
Under the IDEA Project, Dalhousie is building two new buildings and retrofitting three buildings on our Sexton campus. As part of this effort there is over $4.5 million dollars worth of sustainability specific elements including 150 kw building solar system connected via software with 250 kWh of Battery Storage for research and operational (microgrid); geo-exchange field used for building heating and cooling and process water cooling (backed up with hot water DE system); air quality station brought into the BAS, rain water cisterns used for toilet flushing but also research; enhanced building envelope features including triple pane windows; extra insulation and air leakage testing; an active green corridor for cycling and pedestrians, with research sensors embedded in the design; a green roof built for teaching and operations; educational initiatives; more detailed level of smart metering connected to EMIS, and many energy efficient systems. The IDEA project is close to completion and will be officially opening in the summer - fall/2018.
