Diameter tree replacement guideline
None
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome :
The guideline states that when trees have to be removed, they must be replaced using a diameter tree replacement ratio, that is, the total diameter of new trees must equal the diameter of the trees that are lost. For example, if a 50cm tree is removed, it must be replaced with 10, 5cm trees. This is in recognition of the significant ecological, social, and economic value trees contribute to the campus

A brief description of any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation (if not reported above):
In 2011, 47 maple and oak trees were removed to accommodate the Dalhousie Ocean Sciences Building (DOSB). To adhere to the diameter tree replacement guidelines, 200 trees were planted in 2014. 200 trees with a total combined diameter equaled the 47 trees removed.
