A brief description of the snow and ice removal program, policy, or practice:

Dalhousie University makes use of machinery which is calibrated to deliver the optimal amount of salt to deal with the conditions on a per storm basis. We are exploring new technologies and methods constantly in an attempt to keep up with best practice and to be environmentally sensitive within the limitations of the local climate as well as operating within ever tightening financial constraints. Where possible and practical we explore the option of using alternative ice control systems like heated ramps and entrances.

A combination of contracted service as well as in house snow clearing operations exist here. Internal roadways and parking lots as well as sidewalks are contractor serviced while building entrances, steps and accessible entrances are managed in-house. We initiate service by the contractor in instances where snow and ice removal becomes necessary so it is at our discretion as an institution.
