A brief description of how the student educators are selected (1st program):

Dalhouise offers environmental themed community, or cluster, for students in residences. An environmental cluster leader is hired each year to run environmental programs.

The Green Residence Forum works on fostering sustainability awareness and practices among students that live within residences. The Forum includes student chairs and reps from each residence. They help to run programming such as the Eco-Olympics each year. They connect with Student Union student run annual events such as Green Week.

The GRF includes individual student volunteers, student representatives (RA’s, Cluster Leaders, Residence Council food/recycling reps, Sustainability Team members, student society rep) and one/ or two paid, appointed student co-chairs. The structure of the GRF will include at least one representative from each residence (Howe, Gerard, Risley, Shirreff, Eliza Ritchie, Mini-Residence, and O’Brien). At least one RA, one DSU food and recycling, and one Sustainability Team should be represented on the GR .


A brief description of the formal training that the student educators receive (1st program):

Office of Sustainability provides sustainability training to the group each year including sustainability overview of the issues – 3 hours and specific training on eco-olympics and relevant topics. Educators guides have been developed such as RETHink program manual with over 11 educational activities. This is also promoted during Residence Assistants training in early August.


A brief description of the staff and/or other financial support the institution provides to the program (1st program):

Honorariums are provided for the Chair(s) of the Green residence Forum (from the Office of Sustainability) and the food and recycling reps for each residence (from the Dalhousie Student Union).

Training is provided by the Office of Sustainability. Staff support Eco-Olympic programming and other residence green initiatives. A small budget is provided for programs.
