Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Dashboard reveals migration path of billions of birds

A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:

The Cornell Lab of Ornithology has launched the extraordinary Migration Dashboard, which allows the general public to access information about local bird movements on any given night during migration. This tool is important because bird migration patterns are changing—and climate change may be to blame The BirdCast tool uses weather surveillance radar to estimate the total number of birds migrating over an area, their directions, speeds, and altitudes, as well as historical patterns (beginning in 2013). This tool provides a real-time analysis of nocturnal migration at both the county and state level between sunset and sunrise. Since bird migration typically occurs at night, this intriguing phenomenon has remained largely unseen for generations. This new platform will allow more people to be able to access information about bird migration, including what species is migrating where and when. The data is also valuable to conservation, as it can be used to guide decisions about hazards. For instance, on nights that are predicted to have high intensity migration, certain areas can issue an order to turn off building lights and wind turbines to avoid killing migrating birds. This is especially helpful for vulnerable, endangered, and critically endangered species.
