Name or title of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:
Swipe Out Hunger
A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome that outlines how credit criteria are met and any positive measurable outcomes associated with the innovation:
This program to help fight food insecurity on campus was launched in Spring 2019 by Cornell Dining and the Office of the Dean of Students (First-Generation and Low-Income Student Support). Cornell students have the opportunity to donate one “bonus meal” each semester to fellow students who are in need; bonus meals are typically used for guest meal swipes. Donated meals are collected in a central “Swipe Out Hunger Fund” and qualifying students receive access to a “Swipe Out Hunger Meal Plan” depending on their self-disclosed need. Students can donate meals by emailing dining@cornell.edu or donating at one of many tabling events. Over 400 meals were donated during the program’s first semester, and over 1000 meals were donated during Orientation Week in August 2019.
