Does the institution offer at least one sustainability-focused major, degree program, or the equivalent for graduate students (I.e. an interdisciplinary academic program that concentrates on sustainability as an integrated concept)?:
Yes

Name of the sustainability-focused graduate-level degree program:
Civil and Environmental Engineering (M.Eng.)

A brief description of the graduate-level degree program:

The M.Eng. program in Engineering Management is geared towards engineers who want to stay in a technological environment, but advance to managerial roles. Through an in-depth, real-world group design project, and course content in management science, project management, decision and risk analysis, information technology, finance and accounting, and organizational behavior students gain the technical and managerial skills necessary to become effective engineering managers. They also learn managerial skills to help organize and supervise people from different cultures and backgrounds so as to maximize teamwork, creativity, and productivity, and to do so in an environment of global awareness and concern for ethical issues. Students learn to identify problems, formulate and analyze models to understand them, and interpret analysis results for managerial action. Further, they learn to navigate this process with a broad, global perspective that considers the full range of technical, economic, environmental, social and other consequences over an appropriate time horizon. While critically important to the success of engineering managers, many of these skills, the managerial and systems analysis abilities in particular, are not emphasized in traditional engineering curricula.

Name of the sustainability-focused, graduate-level degree program (3rd program):
Agriculture and Life Sciences (Soil and Crop Sciences) M.P.S.

A brief description of the graduate degree program (3rd program):

The Master of Professional Studies (MPS) degree program at Cornell CALS is ideal for career-focused students interested in the thorough study of issues and advancements in the fields of life, social, and environmental sciences and agriculture.
At Cornell CALS, our MPS program spans multiple fields of study within the realm of agriculture and life sciences, including animal science, food science, global development, horticulture, plant and soil science, biological and environmental engineering, and more.

The Master of Professional Studies program has two main components:

Coursework: Students work with a faculty advisor to map out their individualized course of study based on their areas of interest. The majority of courses (20 credits) will be within CALS; however, students have the opportunity to take courses across Cornell.
Capstone project: With the guidance of a faculty advisor, students work on solving a real-world problem.

Does the institution offer one or more graduate-level sustainability-focused minors, concentrations or certificates?:
Yes

Name of the graduate-level sustainability-focused minor, concentration or certificate:
Sustainable Energy

A brief description of the graduate minor, concentration or certificate:

Meeting the energy needs of the present and future global population is a grand challenge for the 21st century. This will hasten an improvement in lifestyles of those from developing nations and should be achieved without further impairment of the natural environment and climate. Providing affordable, clean energy that is both secure and sustainable is the goal. Achievement of this goal requires the participation, ingenuity, and hard work of people from a great range of specialized activities working collaboratively. Accordingly, this minor is intended to integrate scientific and engineering principles that focus on the creation, analysis, and improvement of energy technologies, with knowledge of environmental systems potentially impacted by energy production, and with an understanding of human systems that are intertwined with energy-related decisions. An outcome of the minor should be an understanding of the ways in which those themes interact as a system, all of whose parts need to be understood and successfully integrated in order to progress toward meeting the world’s energy needs.

Urban Studies

A brief description of the graduate minor, concentration or certificate (2nd program):

Urban studies is an interdisciplinary minor field intended to complement basic studies in such Fields as City and Regional Planning, Economics, Government, History, Human Development, Management, and Sociology, as well as various fields in engineering. The minor helps students develop competence in such subject areas as processes of urban change, public policy and administration, theories of urbanization, urban ecology, urban economics, urban planning, urban political processes, and urban social structure. Because of this field's interdisciplinary character, the faculty member who represents the student's urban studies minor on the Special Committee cannot be a faculty member in the student's major field.

Name of the graduate-level sustainability-focused minor, concentration or certificate (3rd program):
American Indian and Indigenous Studies

A brief description of the graduate minor, concentration or certificate (3rd program):

They must take two courses to qualify for the minor: a one-credit colloquium offered once a year in which students and faculty present their research; and a three-credit course in critical approaches to American Indian Studies, also offered once a year. Faculty expertise spans multiple fields, including anthropology, archeology, art history, history, literature, law, sociology, horticulture, and natural resources, enabling students to develop programs that address their specific interests. Faculty with specific research expertise in Iroquois (Haudenosaunee) studies and indigenous issues globally within diverse disciplines further broaden opportunities for study.
