A brief description of the innovative policy, practice, program, or outcome:

Healthy Gardens, Healthy Youth” People’s Garden School Pilot Project
This program, conducted in collaboration with Washington State University, Iowa State University, and the University of Arkansas, was selected as the sole recipient of a nationwide grant program funded by the US Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service. This Extension - Research Partnership has engaged more than 3,000 elementary students in creating vegetable gardens in 50 low–income schools in four states, as part of a 2.5 year research study. The School Gardens Research team, in the lab of Professor Nancy Wells in Design & Environmental Analysis, also leads several associated projects including a study funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation through its Active Living Research program to examine the effects of school gardens on children's physical activity.
