Second Point of Distinction

Name of a second highlighted sustainability program/initiative/accomplishment:
Sustainability Living Lab

A brief description of the second program/initiative/accomplishment:
The Sustainability Living Lab will support our community in innovating towards sustainability solutions.

The goals of the lab are to:
- Link the Plan’s vision, goals and targets with hands-on learning activities for students through classroom projects and internship opportunities
- Form partnerships with researchers interested in using the campus as a testing ground for solutions to sustainability problems
- Enable community members to propose and implement projects that bring us closer to our goals of more sustainable food, waste, climate, research and curriculum at Concordia.

We have piloted the Sustainability Living Lab Funding Program in partnership with the Sustainability Action Fund so that we can fund community-led projects that work across sectors and provide experiential learning opportunities while responding to the goals and targets of our action plan. This summer, we will consult with our community to understand the needs, barriers, and opportunities related to community involvement in such a program, so that we can effectively develop and launch the framework to support community innovation towards our sustainability goals at Concordia.

In Fall 2019, Concordia became one of the first universities in Canada to commit to a full divestment or our university-controlled assets from fossil fuels resources.

The Concordia University Foundation announced a five-year commitment to:
- Achieve 100% sustainable investments by 2025
- Fully divest our endowment fund from the coal, oil, and gas sectors so that 0% of our investments remain in those sectors
- Allocate 10% our investments in impact investing

This is known as the 100%-0%-10% strategy, and we are the first Canadian university to make this commitment.

These commitments relate to the university's endowment fund of $242 million, which are within university control.
