Has the institution implemented a campus-wide inventory system to facilitate the reuse of laboratory chemicals?:
Yes

A brief description of the program:

The project to create a university-wide inventory management system was partially funded by a federal program called CRTI (Chemical Research and Technology Initiative). The system was developed by four institutions, Concordia being one of them, in partnership with a software manufacturing company. The Canadianized product being developed is called HECHMET.

The inventory system is designed with group security in mind, so it allows individuals to view or access only those items assigned to their group. The system has incorporated Canadian legislative components to assist in regulatory compliance at the institution level. There are many goals for a program of this nature but one that is noteworthy is the reduction of the chemical load held at the university. One of the byproducts of an institution-wide inventory system when implemented in a central receiving model is greater control on the items entering the institution.

Although reuse of chemicals is not specified as one of the goals of a system like this, the other two tenets of basic recycling do come into play. The inventory system allows for reduction of chemicals ordered, stored and used, as well as the recycling of some unused chemicals by means of sharing inventories between labs.
