ER-18: Sustainability Research Incentives

All programs which encourage faculty research, simultaneously encourage student research as they make up research teams led by faculty members.

Samples of such programs have been extracted from the Strategic Research Plan, which states that 'the creation of internal funding envelopes to directly support, encourage, and nurture research activity is essential.'

Catalyst programs: Catalyst programs provide funding to individual researchers or teams, as well as start-up funding for new researchers to seed research projects or programs with the goal of
securing external funding.

Development and Enhancement of Excellence programs: Excellence programs are designed to encourage established researchers to participate in major high-profile competitions and assume leadership roles in inter-institutional research initiatives. Smaller scale high quality projects with significant leveraging potential are also supported through this funding envelope. The objective of this funding envelope is to increase the number of high profile research awards hosted by Concordia research
teams.

Positioning programs: Positioning programs provide basic funding for established and emerging research units
such as centres, platforms and networks. The envelope also provides funding that enables Concordia researchers to participate in external research centres and organizations.

Valorisation programs
The valorisation envelope provides funds for the evaluation, protection and commercialization of technologies deemed to have strong commercial potential or strategic significance. In addition, support is available for pre-commercialization proof of concept studies, prototyping and the further development of early stage technologies
with strong commercial potential.

Outreach programs: The Outreach program has been established to support events such as workshops, seminars, conferences, exhibitions, performances and lectures that stem from, and give
visibility to, research and creative activity undertaken at Concordia University. The program provides scholarly publication support and other aids to the dissemination of
research and creative accomplishments.

The School of Arts and Science also holds an Undergraduate Research day which is an oral and poster presentation event that showcases the highest caliber research and research-creation projects of students in the social sciences, natural and health sciences, and humanities. The day concludes with an awards ceremony recognizing and encouraging the research work of students.

Since one of the tenets of the Office of the VPRGS is to
strengthen university-wide policies and procedures in support of research and
