A brief description of the student sustainability research program:

The Student Government Association's Sustainability Fund accepts proposals for sustainability related, practical research, and provides support for such research including: a stipend, support from a faculty mentor, opportunities to present their research, and an avenue to apply lessons learned to practices on campus or in the local community.

In outlying the criteria for hiring and for tenure and promotion, the Faculty Handbook states, "We define scholarship broadly so that faculty creativity, expressed in numerous ways, is valued: Scholarship is an investigation or creation pursued in a systematic way and presented to peers in a written, oral, visual or aural form for comment and critique. Peers may be departmental, Concordia, or professional-society colleagues… It is helpful to distinguish several categories of scholarship that are valued throughout this liberal arts college… Interdisciplinary Scholarship. This category consists of investigations at the interface between traditional disciplines or investigations by a team of faculty of a broad problem. Examples include research projects submitted for publication, book reviews, creative writing, textbook writing, recitals, musical compositions, artistic productions and performances, invited lectures, presentations at local, regional and national meetings, and leading in-service workshops.”

A brief description of the institution’s library support for sustainability research:

The Carl B. Ylvisaker Library is engaged with the campus sustainability initiatives and provides support for sustainability research and learning. The primary avenue of support is in acquiring books, journals, and other materials related to sustainability. In 2017 the library purchased the JSTOR Sustainability Collection of approximately 2300 journals, books, and research reports. In addition, the librarians at Concordia teach an average of 200 class sessions each year on research and information literacy. For those classes with sustainability components, the librarians cover those topics and related resources.
