A brief description of the themed housing, including name(s) and descriptions of theme(s):
The EcoHouse, which opened its doors in Fall 2012, is managed by Concordia's Residence Life staff, and is a housing option available to juniors and seniors by application. The four student residents are dedicated to sustainable living in this living-learning community. They practice methods of sustainable living by reducing waste, using fewer resources, and continuing to develop new projects and activities, including hosting public and neighborhood events in the community.
In the first year (2012-2013) projects included sealing the windows for the winter, hanging thermal curtains to retain heat, replacing light bulbs with compact fluorescent bulbs, using a vermiculture composting system (which uses earthworms to decompose food waste), and replacing a drafty front door. Residents also held a Spring Showcase for members of the community to visit the house and learn about the project. Longer-term projects include investigation into solar PV and the installation of a more fuel-efficient furnace.
