A brief description of the plan:
As a densely situated urban campus, Columbia encourages the increased use of biking for travel to and around campus. The University has been supportive of NYC’s expanded bike lanes and plan; promoting it to faculty, staff and students. More than 150 bike racks are installed throughout the Morningside campus to provide safe, convenient storage for bicyclists. In addition, students, staff and faculty can receive discounts on bicycles and/or bicycling safety equipment through select businesses, and Public Safety sponsors bicycle registration with the NYPD for all students, faculty, and staff. CUMC also has added bike racks around its campus. Bike Rack maps are available for both the Morningside and CUMC campuses.
Columbia University has formed a biking committee to explore ways to promote a more bike-friendly Morningside campus. Issues to be researched include providing shower and locker facilities, bicycle fix-it stations, bicycle storage and a campus-wide bike sharing program.
Since bicycling is one of the most healthy, economical, fun and environmentally friendly ways to commute, Columbia University encourages its students, faculty and staff to bike to campus. Twice a year on both campuses, Columbia hosts “Bike to Campus Day.” Participating cyclists receive a free bike tune-up, free bike registration with the NYPD and CU Public Safety, discount bike locks and accessories, and other bicycle safety tips.
