The University has committed to meeting a minimum of LEED Silver practices for all new construction and major renovations. Using green buildings policies or guidelines, Columbia has renovated approximately 185,000 GSF in lab space in Pupin and Fairchild, Lerner Hall student union, Hammer Teacher & Learning Center, CEPSER, IAB and other buildings on the Morningside, LDEO, and CUMC campuses by using various sustainability practices including: using recycled content materials, applying low voc paint, recycling carpet and other building materials, installation of energy efficient equipment, lead paint and asbestos removal and the remediation of brownfields sites.
