Colorado State University’s Facilities Management Department (FM) strives to operate & maintain all buildings on campus in such a way that the health of the building occupants and the environment are protected. In doing this FM takes into account sustainable operations and maintenance with a particular interest on reducing energy and water consumption and providing good indoor environmental quality. Purchasing policies and practices at the university encourage the usage of environmentally preferable products. For example, Housing and Dining Services has adopted green cleaning policy.

A study from 2010, funded by the Governor's Energy Office and conducted by CSU Foundation and the Institute for the Built Environment, has been approved to begin investing in efficiency projects for existing campus buildings that will engage students and faculty in applying green building strategies. This innovative funding and investment strategy will move investments on campus in order to promote sustainability upgrades in existing buildings.
