A brief description of the institution's green laboratory program:
One of our labs was recently certified Platinum by "My Green Labs" in California, a formal green lab certification program. The primary focus of our green labs program is around energy and waste reduction and green chemistry. We recycle nitrile gloves in most of our labs (except for bio-waste or bio-hazard labs which do not allow for recycling). We also recycle plastic pipette boxes and trays and block styrofoam used in packaging and educate lab managers about purchasing materials that can be sent back to the manufacturer or recycled (e.g., gel packs). Our Green Labs webpage gives information about where they can buy more sustainable lab supplies and how to get their lab green certified. Resources for green chemistry are provided. For recycling of lab waste, see https://www.mines.edu/sustainability/lab-waste-initiatives/
