A brief description of the methodology the institution followed to complete the research inventory:
To develop this inventory, data was taken from the Colorado School of Mines Office of Research Administration (ORA). Data on research efforts at Mines was given in the form of a .xlsx file that documented project names, PIs, funding sources, keywords, and departmental affiliation.
To determine the total number of employees conducting research, the number of unique PIs provided in the ORA research inventory was totaled. Then, using funding sources, project descriptions, and keywords, any research related to water, energy, community responsibility, solar, renewables, ecosystems, and otherwise was marked as "sustainability research." This sustainability research was then tallied to include unique PIs across all research projects and departmental affiliation across all research projects. These totals resulted in the totals included in this section of the STARS report.
