Metric used in scoring for Part 1
Part 2. Reduction in source energy use per unit of floor area
Baseline year energy consumption
STARS 2.2 requires electricity data in kilowatt-hours (kWh). If a baseline has already been established in a previous version of STARS and the institution wishes to continue using it, the electricity data must be re-entered in kWh. To convert existing electricity figures from MMBtu to kWh, simply multiply by 293.07107 MMBtu/kWh.
kWh | MMBtu | |
Imported electricity | 18,131,625 Kilowatt-hours | 61,865.10 MMBtu |
Electricity from on-site, non-combustion facilities/devices (e.g., renewable energy systems) | 0 Kilowatt-hours | 0 MMBtu |
Stationary fuels and thermal energy, baseline year (report MMBtu):
MMBtu | |
Stationary fuels used on-site to generate electricity and/or thermal energy | 125,193.12 MMBtu |
Imported steam, hot water, and/or chilled water | 0 MMBtu |
Total site energy consumption, baseline year:
Baseline year building space
Baseline period
Start date | End date | |
Baseline period | July 1, 2007 | June 30, 2008 |
A brief description of when and why the energy consumption baseline was adopted:
The baseline was adopted for the academic period leading up to the college signing the ACUPCC in 2009.
Source energy
Total energy consumption per unit of floor area:
Site energy | Source energy | |
Performance year | 0.09 MMBtu per square foot | 0.15 MMBtu per square foot |
Baseline year | 0.09 MMBtu per square foot | 0.16 MMBtu per square foot |

Optional Fields
A brief description of the institution's initiatives to shift individual attitudes and practices in regard to energy efficiency:
The Office of Sustainability sends out blockly communication to campus on sustainable initiatives and has a robust student intern program for outreach to staff, students and faculty. Facilities Services has published Facility Life Cycle Cost Guidelines for Sustainability and Sustainable O&M and Purchasing Guidelines to guide decisions and promote energy efficiency and sustainability on campus.
A brief description of energy use standards and controls employed by the institution:
Colorado College Facilities Services published the Facility Design Guidelines that incorporate High Performance Design Criteria for new buildings and renovations. In addition, the Life Cycle Cost and Sustainable O&M Guidelines provide energy efficiency goals as well as basic principles and guidance to act as a framework for enhancing energy efficiency and sustainable practices on campus. The HVAC systems for the large residential, educational and support buildings on campus are controlled by a central DDC Building Automation System. This system controls and schedules HVAC systems to optimize operation and also meters electricity, gas and district heating and cooling energy usage for buildings.
A brief description of Light Emitting Diode (LED) lighting and other energy-efficient lighting strategies employed by the institution:
LED lighting systems are the standard for new construction and renovation projects. Also, the Facilities Services department evaluates on an annual basis which building lighting systems are up for renewal and will retro-fit those systems with LEDs at that time.
A brief description of passive solar heating, geothermal systems, and related strategies employed by the institution:
CC does employs active solar heating with its solar thermal array on the roof of the Worner Student Center. CC has a geothermal heating system under Armstrong Quad and Geothermal systems are employed at Tutt Library, Hybl community Center and the East Campus housing buildings (Salazar, Chiles, Goodacre, Fleming, Clark, Ellingwood, Heckman and Roberts houses).
A brief description of co-generation employed by the institution:
A combined heat and power systems using natural gas to produce electricity and heat is installed at Tutt Library
A brief description of the institution's initiatives to replace energy-consuming appliances, equipment, and systems with high efficiency alternatives:
Facilities Services has published Guidelines for Sustainable O&M and Purchasing to guide decisions and promote energy efficiency and sustainability on campus. These include campus standards when replacing energy consuming equipment and appliances.
