Although there are no formal OA policies in place for faculty and staff, voluntary submissions are encouraged and there are structures in place for student work. Mandatory policies are in place with Arts & Sciences, School of Education and Undergraduate Honors: electronic theses and dissertations (ETD) for student work. Arts & Sciences Graduate Level: ETD policy was adopted by the Committee on Graduate Studies in December 2015 for mandatory ETD submissions to begin Spring 2016. Students are offered embargo periods for delayed release of full-text. Undergraduate Honors Theses: ETD policy adopted for mandatory submissions in Spring 2014. Students are offered embargo periods for delayed release of full-text. School of Education ETD policy was adopted in December 2015 for mandatory ETD submissions to begin Spring 2016. Students are offered embargo periods for delayed release of full-text.

A brief description of how the institution’s library(ies) support open access to research:
W&M Libraries supports and provides a digital platform, Digital Commons BePress, as a repository for ETD, OA faculty scholarship, Open Educational Resources (OER) and OA Journals. The libraries partnered with the graduate offices on the ETD initiative, sponsors OER grants for faculty and events and discussions with academics during the annual Open Access Week. A Digital Scholarship Librarian position was created and filled in 2015 to manage the repository and provide outreach for OA and copyright education to the campus community.
