A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the municipal/local level:
CLC's president Dr. Lori Suddick serves on the boards for the Lake County Partners for Economic Development, Workforce Investment Board of Lake County, and the Lake County United Way. She is a tireless advocate for increasing opportunities with social equity. CLC's Dean of the Lakeshore Campus also serves on the board for the United Way.
CLC's president works with local government and business leaders on the Lake County Workforce Development Board on the following goals: to attract, develop, and prepare a well-trained workforce, to support quality education and enhance training opportunities, to facilitate greater collaboration among and between workforce partners, and to strengthen Lake County's position as a workforce development leader. This ongoing collaboration leverages local government and business partnerships is social equity in action, enhancing CLC's education and training to help more students get the training they need to boost their economic opportunities.
CLC advocates for EV charge stations, renewable energy, open space conservation and preservation, watershed planning, and other policies in Lake County with local municipalities and county agencies.

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the state/provincial/regional level:
CLC participates actively on the Illinois Community College Board's Resource Allocation Management Program (RAMP) to advocate for how the State of Illinois funds community college capital projects. CLC has been advocating for specific priority weighting for sustainability projects, especially energy efficiency and renewable energy projects.
CLC Trustees participate actively on the Illinois Community College Trustee Association which has been pushing for support of the Monetary Award Program, which the Governor has just included an additional $50 million to support college students in the state. CLC trustees support the ICCT in advocating for equitable state funding to keep community colleges affordable for students.
CLC is a leader in the state of Illinois as one of the co-sponsors of the Illinois Green Economy Network (IGEN), a consortium of Illinois community colleges working together to share resources, common experiences and best practices to help grow the new green economy. CLC works closely in the Partnership for College Completion’s Illinois Equity in Attainment initiativ and supports statewide social equity work.

A brief description of how the institution engages in public policy advocacy for sustainability at the national level:
CLC's trustees support and participate actively with the AACC's Association of Community College Trustees to advocate for reauthorization of the Higher Education Act. The AACCT is seeking to boost funding for Pell Grants and support state investments in lowering costs of community college. These advocacy efforts seek to enhance community college student access and success and will increase economic mobility. CLC and the ACCT have advocated on behalf of Dreamers to seek protection and permanent legal status for students enrolled in the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrival(DACA) program.

Achieving the Dream helps colleges create a robust pipeline from K-12 through community college and into a four-year degree program that students successfully complete. This work will especially ease the transition for historically disadvantaged groups, leading to more equitable outcomes in the long run.

The College of Lake County hosts study abroad programs that support sustainability initiatives, such as Sustainability in China and Education in Costa Rica. These student programs support environmental sustainability and social equity initiatives overseas. CLC supports the United Nations definition of sustainability and the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals in its Sustainability Plan.
