Majors and degree programs

Does the institution offer at least one sustainability-focused major, degree program, or the equivalent for graduate students?:
Yes

Name of the sustainability-focused graduate-level degree program:
Master of Science in Environmental and Sustainability Studies

A brief description of the graduate-level degree program:
The Environmental and Sustainability Studies Program at the College is designed to provide students with an appreciation of the interdisciplinary nature of environmental problems through graduate level studies of both policy and science.

This interdisciplinary focus enables faculty and students to address a wide variety of the resource, development and planning pressures that currently face our local and global communities. Through core and elective course curriculum, faculty expertise and specialization development (the clustering of courses in areas such as coastal and wetlands management, environmental planning and environmental hazards), the program provides training that addresses each of these challenges.

Six departments (Biology, Geology and Environmental Geosciences, Mathematics, Physics and Astronomy, Political Science and Economics) contribute core and elective coursework and faculty time to the program.

A brief description of the graduate degree program (2nd program):
Students in the Environmental and Sustainability Studies Program may participate in a concurrent degree program with the Master of Public Administration program, receiving two master's degrees in three years, rather than four. This concurrent degree program prepares students for the challenges of a career in the environmental field. Courses examine the development and implementation of public policy responses to environmental issues, and students gain a greater understanding of how information should be used to assess societal risk and create policy. Through courses offered in the Master of Public Administration program, students learn how to effectively manage organizational resources and navigate political settings.
